When I paint I do not begin with a clear picture of where the painting will end. I begin with an intention which I physically write into the canvas. My beginning intention with “Building Wings” was to heal the pieces of my heart that have resistance to receiving love. I enjoy journaling and free writing during the process of my paintings and often receive insights. Here is the message I received from “Building Wings”:

"It wasn't always this way," you said,
as we sat around the embers.
"You see many years ago
you and me-we flew.
We searched this world with open arms
and laughed until we were blue"

"But slowly things began to change.
We learned to just blend in,
And that's okay
because my dear, you knew I loved you still."

"You wrapped me up
(so safe and snug)
and stored me deep within.
You told me there was danger here
and let the fire grow dim.
and tended me when no one looked
(but that's no way to live)"

"I began to beat and stretch the cloth
which you had wrapped me in.
I called you name-your forgotten name-
and then a thread came loose.
The cloth burst open
and you peeked in.
Two wings now filled the air"

"you came inside, now here we are
as you tend the fire.
I fan my wings and a flame appears,
and then becomes the fire."

"Now I have you wrapped up tight
(beneath my wings of white)
Teaching you how to fly
Preparing to take flight."

"'Ouch!' you said,
as you fell to the ground
and began to try again."

"That's the way, I said out loud,
and nudges you towards the edge.
Little steps and then a leap"
That's what my heart said

So I stood up and made the move,
One foot and then the next.
I looked ahead and saw great joy, but also mixed with pain,
I looked behind unsure at first,
And checked in with my heart,
"I am always here, my love"
and I walked ahead anyway
I hope this work inspires you to open your heart and listen when she knocks.
