Well, things have been super busy here in Kieran land. Our highlights from the past two weeks:
-visiting our best friends in the Peninsula who also happen to have chickens, turkeys, a cat, as well as cool vehicles like a tractor! Kieran had so much fun with her little ones. I love the pic above of Kieran and her little boy looking at the tractor as if they are trying to figure it out. Of course we got to go on the ferry to get to their house, and I thought 'won't it be fun to get out of the car while we cross. Kieran absolutely loved it....until it was time to get back in the car with me pleading, please get in, please get in, we have to get off the boat.
-Maybe because of the ferry Kieran's new favourite word and item is boat. He wants look at pictures of them all the time and if he hears a loud engine instead of being a truck now it is a boat.
-This past week's adventure has been the potty! We started out really strong, him excited to go on the potty, and telling us to come, but by the end of the first day he wasn't having fun anymore. Day 2 and 3 were not very fun for either of us-but he has been doing really well. He is really independent and doesn't like a lot of help, but is still getting the hang of things.
-Sunday he went to is friends 2nd birthday party and had a blast. He started off a little quiet but a little (a lot) of juice and cake and he was flying.
-My favourite animal noises that he currently makes are duck and frog (which are down in a very growly rasp quack and rrrrribit) and monkey.
He makes me smile everyday. Love my little man.
I signed up for a class with artist Ivy Newport called "Whimsical Portraits and Dreamy Landscapes", Which teaches her style of encaustic art. Encaustic art is art which uses hot beeswax and pigments.
I am in love with this medium (so far). I have only used it once, but the process and result was amazing. The actual activity for this lesson was to create a portrait underneath-I started one, but was having a really hard time-my inner critic was torturing me-which is surprising because I do a lot of portraits. I think it was that my inner perfectionist wanted everything to be perfect for this new medium. So I took a break from my original portrait and turned to a digital photo that I altered into digital art and used it as my base. That way my brain could relax and just experiment and wow!
I couldn't sleep last night because I was so excited thinking of all the possibilities of this medium. I love that it can be used with what I already do, or as a way to refresh it . This medium is really calling to me-it feels like something I can make my own. My goal over the next half of the year is to really deepen my artistic practice. I feel as though I have cut down on the classes I sign up of-unless they are something I feel will deepen my own practice and my emerging style. I titled this post 'melts my heart' because at each layer of wax I could feel this medium in my soul. Each layer made me go oooh and aahhh, and what if I try____. I can't wait to experiment and learn more about this medium. I don't know why, but it just feels like me-lets so how this adventure goes.
(Above is my encaustic piece which is 5x7, below is the original photo.)
Look at this happy guy! He is loving this hat this week, he will not go anywhere without.
This week I learned when Kieran wants to leave, he wants to leave. A couple times we have been out at a grandparents house and he has brought mine and his shoes to me and waved bye, bye.
My favourite thing right now is that he will come and take mine or Peter's hand to take us somewhere to play, or cuddle up with a book.
Just mailed these today to a woman in Florida. They are called Artist Trading Cards (ATCs). I have done a trade once before, but this one was for the class Lifebook 2015. Our theme for the cards was Bravery/Courage, the rest was up to us.
Dandelions, and birds/feathers come up a lot in my work. To me the dandelion is growth, community, change/transformation, letting go, and wishing/dreaming. The bird and feather to me mean hope, adventure, moving forward, taking a leap, and taking a chance. I hope that the cards find their new home safely and that the inspire whoever sees them to move with their dreams.
I know, I know it is Wednesday, and I really have no excuses-I have tons of pictures and stories but I will just share a little today.
This is a picture from today. We went to the dreamland to play before supper and had lots of fun...lots of jumping, barely even able to stay still for one photo!
It has only been a week since summer vacation has started, but I am loving my time with Kieran. We have gone to the Dreamland, the zoo, the pool, set up a sprinkler, walked to the park, indigo, and have just been having a good time.
Funny story: The other day when we were walking down the street I told Kieran we had to turn around for supper, and he did a full circle and kept going in the same direction-another jokester in the house.
Happy Canada Day!
